Fueling Hopes For Burkina Faso’s Sustainable Development

As a land-locked country in West Africa's Sahel region, Burkina Faso is not necessarily one that jumps to mind when thinking about forests and climate change. But knowing that its arid and semi-arid ecosystems have high carbon sequestration potential, particularly its soil, explains why CIF selected Burkina Faso as one of the first countries to participate in its Forest Investment Program (FIP). Back in 2011, this was not an easy decision to accept for many stakeholders as the forestry sector seemed alien to Burkina Faso.

But we stood proudly by that decision because not only is more than 40% of Burkina Faso’s territory covered by wooded areas, but soil and forest management and the preservation of woodlands are identified as top priorities in the country’s development and poverty reduction policies. So we were very eager to visit the country and check the impact of our investments on the ground. We would see firsthand how CIF’s efforts translate for Burkina Faso’s communities.

Offsetting poverty and food insecurity in Burkina Faso

For decades, the forests of Burkina Faso have been chopped down with devastating consequences for rural communities. Climate change is the most significant challenge to achieving sustainable development, as it threatens to drag millions of people into grinding poverty. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) strives to shape more secure futures for thousands of people in some of the most marginalized places on the planet.

Conserving soil and water in Burkina Faso

Widespread deforestation has led to mass desertification and land degradation across Burkina Faso. Logging for firewood and the exploitation of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) pose an enormous threat to the livelihoods of people living in Africa's Sahel Region. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is helping to build back better by financing new techniques to safeguard natural habitats.

Cattle farming is an integral part of life in Burkina Faso. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is endorsing community initiatives to get livestock vaccinated against potential diseases as well as helping build wells so communities can access clean water. Such solutions to avert the climate crisis and create opportunities for a better life for people all over the world are central to the protection of the environment.

Biofuel producers set the pace to preserve forest resources

The sustainable use of forests can provide food for cattle, encourage the production of forest by-products and re-establish environmentally friendly habits. Produced from biomass, biofuels have multiple uses in our daily lives as fuels for power generation and in the production of heat, cooking and manure to grow foodstuffs. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) explores how communities in Burkina Faso are making biofuel from readily available cattle dung sparking a range of versatile outcomes.

Beekeeping modernizes markets in Burkina Faso

Beekeeping is a traditional practice in Burkina Faso, but fires to smoke bee colonies out of trees has caused widespread forest fires and land degradation. A new scheme is in place to restore that land to ensure people can make honey, money and take building sustainable livelihoods into their own hands.

Market gardens generate hope for rural communities

Gardens play an important role in increasing the food security of vulnerable populations, as well as providing them with an alternative source of income. But water for irrigation is not easy to source. The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is helping to build a solar powered water tower and fencing for gardens to preserve moisture. Find out how increasing their production potential is lifting women out of poverty as well as boosting their spirits.
