Mobilizing over $11.3 billion in donor contributions for climate change mitigation and adaptation investments in developing countries. Generating 12.8. gigawatts in clean power capacity worldwide, strengthening the capacity of over 15 million people to cope with climate change. Bringing 372 million hectares of forests under sustainable management. Improving energy access for almost 1.8 million people. Avoiding 194 .5 MtCO2 of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.
These are some of the results obtained by the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) with our multilateral development bank partners since 2008. On June 26 and 27, 2023, leaders from government, multilateral development banks, industry, Indigenous peoples, and civil society will gather in Brasilia, Brazil, to celebrate 15 years of impact, take stock, and look to the future.
The main livestreamed event of the CIF celebration will be held on June 27 under the theme Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow and will feature four Brazilian Ministers: Minister of Finance Fernando Haddad, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva, and Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira. Our World Bank, InterAmerican Development Bank and International Finance Corporation partners will also weigh in on CIF’s legacy. Beyond Brazil, CIF programs in Asia and Africa will be discussed by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Environment, Water and Sanitation, Augustin Kabore; Indigenous Pygmy leader Kapupu Diwa Mutimanwa, a member of the Dedicated Grant Mechanism Global Steering Committee; and International Solar Alliance Director General Ajay Mathur. CIF actively engages with youth leaders and this constituency will be represented through a fireside chat with Brazilian political scientist Eduarda Zoghbi. The day will end with a Brazil-led event focusing on achievements in the Cerrado, where CIF’s $81.14M Forest Investment Program delivered major impact on sustainable land management since its launch in 2012.
Throughout the week, CIF will present new findings and research from our learning & evaluation and monitoring & reporting experts in an interactive CIF Connect space. Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ partners from the Dedicated Grant Mechanism will showcase enhanced livelihood activities in a dedicated marketplace. On June 26, Experts and partners will discuss CIF’s 2bn+ Accelerating Coal Transition program and women climate leadership through two panel discussions.
Brazil, home to one third of the world’s forests, 70 % of the world’s animal and plant known species and 180 Indigenous tribes representing 200,000 people, is at the center of a renewed climate ambition. The Global Environment Facility will hold their 64th Council Meeting in Brasilia in parallel with CIF’s Trust Fund Committee Meetings. Also set in Brasilia, the Annual Global Steering Committee Meeting of the CIF supported Dedicated Grant Mechanism for Indigenous Peoples and local communities will take place during the same week.
