On May 26, 2022, Climate Investment Funds (CIF) joined the high profile 2022 edition of Innovate 4 Climate, an annual event that brings together thought leaders interested in linking climate innovation with investment opportunities to transform dialogue into action.

The workshop, entitled "Supporting Just Transitions to Sustainable Land Use", was held virtually. Please watch the recording here.

Drawing on CIF’s recent case study, Supporting Just Transitions to Sustainable Land Use in Ghana, this workshop explored central questions around the need for, and pathways to, securing just transitions in the Natural Resource Management (NRM) sectors in the global South.

To prevent the worst effects of climate change, societies will need to transform the way many goods and services are produced and how land is used. This will have to happen globally, on a massive scale, and in very little time. These kinds of broad, deep, and potentially disruptive changes are required in the NRM sectors that drive deforestation in many low- and middle-income countries. Such changes can be highly sensitive propositions, especially in the global South, where large segments of the population work in agriculture, forestry, and mining.

A panel of experts discussed several pertinent aspects of how socially inclusive processes can:

  • Mitigate the potential negative effects of change on certain workers, communities, and regional economies that currently depend on today’s natural resource economies;
  • Tap into new economic opportunities associated with more sustainable practices;
  • Address the environmental legacies of mining, agriculture, overexploitation of timber and other forest resources, and deforestation itself.

The expert panel included:

  • Aaron Atteridge, Senior Consultant, Just Transition Initiative at CIF
  • Melissa Pinfield, Executive Director at the Just Rural Transition Secretariat
  • Srestha Banerjee, Director, Just Transition at iFOREST
  • Aidy Halimanjaya, Director & Co-founder at Dala Institute

The I4C workshop forms part of CIF’s Just Transition Initiative (JTI) which leads original research and analysis, including case studies, research papers, commentaries, and podcasts, as well as an upcoming toolbox for planning a just transition.
