Despite the developments supporting transformation of the sector in recent times, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have continued to rise over the last five years.

There is growing consensus that the most commonly agreed strategies toward an effective transition must include increasing electrification using renewable sources, improving energy efficiency and phasing out fossil fuel demand, particularly coal.

The arguments for clean energy have never been stronger. Falling costs of renewable power between 2010 and 2019 – such as by 82% for solar PV, 39% for onshore wind - have made them competitive alternatives to fossil fuels. Over 75 million new jobs are expected to be created in clean energy by 2050, while the 2020 coronavirus pandemic has only confirmed the potential health costs arising from poor air quality.

Although there are overwhelming commercial and environmental arguments in favor of a transition to clean energy, there are significant social, economic and political challenges to resolve. Fossil fuels, such as coal-based regions are typically mono-industry areas, and any transition requires re-orienting the structure of the economy itself including both people and policies. There is also a strong need for the demonstration of new projects in order to make a case for cleaner alternatives through the re-purposing of existing infrastructure.

The ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the response presents an opportunity to take a closer look at our priorities especially those that pertain to addressing the impacts of climate change. A conscious effort must be made to ensure the various stimulus packages are leveraged to develop long-term, sustainable solutions to current and future risks posed by global challenges of a similar scale.

This webinar will explore key considerations in a transition which must be technically sustainable, economically productive and socially inclusive, along with potential opportunities, partnerships and engagement strategies in a post COVID-19 world.
