“Managing the Impact of Wind Energy Development on Birds and Bats”

Following up the consultation meeting held in May 2012 in Washington D.C., a roundtable discussion on “Managing the Impact of Wind Energy Development on Birds and Bats” was held in Cairo, Egypt in September 11, 2012. The aim was to capture experiences and lesson related to birds and bats protection in wind energy development in Egypt.
Key stakeholders such as Egyptian government officials, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)/Civil society organizations (CSOs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and the private sector discussed main challenges on biodiversity management in Turkey. Key areas for future improvement include;
1. Capacity building on assessing the impact of wind power is needed for government institutions as well as local experts.
2. Post-construction monitoring protocol to capture the real impact of wind power projects has to be introduced.
3. There is a need to develop a standardized methodology to assess the impact on birds and bats.
4. Strategic coordination/vision at the institutional level which covers planning, policies and procedures on assessing and managing the impact of wind power on birds and bats is needed.
