Yemen

Yemen

Yemen, with a land area of 527,970 square kilometers (sq km) of which only 2.6 percent is arable, is bordered by Oman and South Arabia, as well as the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Its topography of rugged mountains, highlands, deserts, and coastal plains, coupled with arid weather conditions, renders several regions susceptible to desertification and floods. Yemen is vulnerable to climate-related hazards, such as extreme temperatures, floods, landslides, sea-level rises, and droughts. While these hazards are a natural occurrence in Yemen, their intensity and frequency are likely to increase under a changing climate.

INVESTING IN YEMEN

Yemen

CIF’s investment in Yemen is through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR). Yemen's $1.5 million PPCR investment plan is building on the country's existing efforts, the goals of its national adaptation plan, and its strategic program for climate resilience under PPCR that has been designed to reduce the vulnerability of its coastal populations. Its aims are to support investments that mainstream and enhance climate resilience planning and action.

The program will also help integrate climate resilience and adaptation planning and capacity into Yemen's water and agricultural sectors. PPCR investments will enable the knowledge generation of human and ecological adaptation to climate change in diverse areas and provide a framework to integrate this knowledge at the regional and national levels.
