Thailand

Thailand

Thailand, located at the center of Southeast Asia, is bordered by Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Andaman Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand. Thailand is vulnerable to riverine, flash, and coastal flooding, tropical cyclones, and droughts. Floods, the major natural hazard, are likely to increase with climate change. The resultant increase in intense rainfall events will lead to irregular riverbank overflow, flash floods in urban areas, landslides and flash floods in mountain areas, along with flooding in coastal areas from sea-level rises.

INVESTING IN THAILAND

Thailand

CIF’s investment in Thailand is through its Clean Technology Fund (CTF). Thailand’s $86 million CTF investment plan is catalyzing private-sector investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and supporting direct investments in these two areas through state-owned electric utilities and Bangkok’s bus rapid transit system. The plan seeks to overcome the institutional, technical, market, risk perception, and financial barriers hindering clean technology investments. CTF is helping to establish replicable business models and providing technical assistance to financial institutions to expand lending to both public and private developers.

Through the CIF-TAF, there was over $ 500,000 programmed for technical assistance activities in 2020 and 2021. The programs covered an array of topics such as scaling up smart energy and efficiency solutions, and mitigation and adaptation measures to support green and resilient Covid-19 recovery in the region.
