Rwanda

Rwanda

Rwanda is a small landlocked country in Central Africa, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Dem. Rep. of Congo. Over the past 30 years, the frequency and intensity of floods and droughts have increased in Rwanda, due to extreme precipitation changes in Eastern Africa. While floods occur regularly in the northern and western parts due to heavy rains, droughts are also a recurring natural disaster, causing famines, depletion of water resources, and increased incidences of meningitis and other diseases.

Rwanda

CIF’s investments in Rwanda are through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP), Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) and Forest Investment Program (FIP). The country’s $50-million SREP investment plan is supporting private-sector off-grid energy solutions, such as standalone solar photovoltaic solutions and mini-grids using renewable energy sources, in order to expand energy access in rural areas. SREP financing is helping to overcome financial, institutional, and technical barriers to establishing sustainable off-grid markets.

Rwanda’s strategic program for climate resilience under CIF’s Pilot Program for Climate Resilience is focused on strengthening resilience in the agriculture and water sectors, climate-proofing urban land use planning, and safeguarding Rwanda’s most disaster-prone landscapes against floods and landslides.
