Peru

Peru

Peru, located in the center of South America, shares borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. It has a total area of 1,285,216 square kilometers (sq km). The country’s latitude, its mountain ranges, sharp variations in topography, and the Humboldt (ocean) Current create dramatically different climatic zones. Its geographic diversity makes the country vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, flash flooding, landslides, and volcanic activity, among others, especially with the majority of its population residing along the coast.

INVESTING IN PERU

Peru

CIF's investment in Peru is through its Forest Investment Program (FIP). In line with Peru's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) strategy, its $55-million FIP investment plan is focused on integrated forest landscape management in key deforestation “hotspots.” The plan includes a number of activities that will help preserve the rich biodiversity of the country.

It also addresses the titling and registration of rural properties and communal lands to end open access to forest resources, the improvement of forest and environmental governance, the enhancement of the value of environmental assets of forests and degraded areas, and activities for innovation and market development.

Through the CIF-TAF, about $ 500,000 was programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The funding covered a wide range of areas such as developing policies and regulations to enable green hydrogen investment, mainstreaming climate change in the national Innovation Policy for Economic Recovery, and supporting urban transformation investments to promote green and resilient recovery from Covid-19.
