Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea

Located in the South West Pacific, Papua New Guinea comprises the eastern half of New Guinea island and four additional islands — Manus, New Ireland, New Britain, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. The country is primarily vulnerable to coastal, river, and surface flooding, with 18 percent of its landmass either permanently or regularly inundated. Furthermore, it is affected by approximately 15 tropical cyclones every decade. The country’s vulnerability is exacerbated by its lack of coping capacity.

INVESTING IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Papua New Guinea

CIF’s investment in Papua New Guinea is through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR). Papua New Guinea is one of three island nations participating in a regional PPCR program in the Pacific. The country's strategic program for climate resilience under PPCR supports mainstreaming climate change into national development planning, as well as building the capacities of communities in vulnerable atolls and islands, government agencies, and civil society to enable them to plan and respond to climate change impacts.

Its $30-million PPCR investment plan is aimed at carrying out vulnerability assessments and adaptation plans in target areas; piloting measures for sustainable fishery ecosystems and food security, and climate-proofing critical ports, roads, and other infrastructure.

Through the CIF-Technical Assistance Facility, about $290,000 was programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The programs covered an array of activites to support climate adaptation, through climate-resilient capacity building and post-harvest technologies to support the Covid-19 recovery for smallholder coffee farmers.
