Morocco

Morocco

Morocco is located in the northwestern corner of the African continent. The country shares its borders with Spain, Algeria, and Western Sahara. It is also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Alboran Sea. Morocco is vulnerable to extreme temperatures, droughts, and flooding. As Morocco is likely to become hotter and drier in the future, it will be experiencing more frequent and severe droughts, thereby impacting water supply, biodiversity, and agriculture. A potential increase in flooding will also pose a serious water pollution threat.

INVESTING IN MOROCCO

Morocco

CIF’s investment in Morocco is through its Clean Technology Fund (CTF). In line with its national energy strategy that seeks to increase wind and solar power generation capacity by 2,000 megawatts (MW) each by 2020, Morocco's $150-million CTF investment plan focused at expanding wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) development.

Its CTF concessional financing is contributing to 1,070 MW in new wind power capacity and helping to establish the infrastructure needed to make wind energy commercially viable. It is also supporting the deployment of the first mid-sized solar PV plants in the country to generate 75–100 MW in total, which is expected to pave the way for solar PV penetration nationwide.

Through the CIF-TAF, about $200,000 was programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The program covered activities that aim to support the national green recovery in the aftermath of Covid-19 through development of climate-smart policies.
