Mali

Mali

Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa, sharing its borders with Mauritania, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. The country is vulnerable to droughts, floods, and crop pests. Climatic changes already pose a significant threat to the country’s development, due in part to erratic rainfall, increased crop pests, rainfall shortages, and breaks during critical growing periods, as well as desertification over the last 50 years.

Mali

CIF’s investment in Mali is through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP). Mali's $51-million SREP investment plan aims to support policy and institutional strategies, financial and regulatory frameworks, and sustainable investments in renewable energy solutions. The goal is to target proven technologies and best practices that will enable the productive use of energy and improve the livelihoods of Malian populations.

The focus is on removing barriers inhibiting the scaling up of private-sector investments and increasing electricity access in rural areas through standardized business models for solar photovoltaic systems and biofuel hybrid mini-grid schemes, and the development of mini/micro hydroelectricity.
