Madagascar

Madagascar

Madagascar is a large island nation located in the southwestern part of the Indian Ocean, just off the southeastern edge of the African continent. The country is vulnerable to droughts, earthquakes, epidemics, floods, cyclones, extreme temperatures, and sea-level rises. Its vulnerability is exacerbated by the country’s lack of functional institutions, developmental challenges characterized by high poverty and illiteracy rates of approximately 70 percent (as of 2005), and an uncertain political situation.

INVESTING IN MADAGASCAR

Madagascar

CIF’s investments in Madagascar are through its Scaling up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) and its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR). The investment plans aim to address the country’s poverty alleviation and economic expansion, while protecting its rich natural capital. Madagascar’s SREP investment plan is focused on the specific institutional, financial, and economic barriers to scaling up renewable energy.

The country’s development of its strategic program for climate resilience under PPCR aims to address its specific vulnerabilities by strengthening institutional capacity, provision of climate and weather services, channeling public investments toward resilient infrastructure, enhancing climate resilience in coastal cities, and working with the agriculture sector to fortify food and livelihood security.
