Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is a landlocked country located in Central Asia. It shares borders with Russia, China, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyz Republic. The Caspian Sea forms a natural boundary to the west. The country is vulnerable to glacial and rainfall mudflows, which present a significant danger for populated areas situated near glaciers. Based on the projected increase in torrential precipitation, the frequency of mudflow events might increase. Unusually warm days and heavy rains have also caused serious flooding.

INVESTING IN KAZAKHSTAN

Kazakhstan

CIF’s investment in Kazakhstan is through its Clean Technology Fund (CTF). In line with the country's outline of energy sector priorities to reduce the economy's carbon intensity by 50 percent from 2015 to 2020, Kazakhstan's $64-million CTF investment plan is focused on efforts to modernize district heating systems in target cities. This includes improving demand-side energy efficiency and catalyzing transformative investments in latent renewable energy potential.

The plan will also support the legal and regulatory framework for renewable energy development, as well as the construction of Kazakhstan’s first large-scale wind and solar projects totaling 100 megawatts.

Through the CIF-TAF, there was approximately $ 700,000 programmed for technical assistance activities in 2020 and 2021. The programs covered an array of topics such as sustainable and inclusive green acceleration through development and integration of carbon market services, and capacity building for renewable energy integration.
