Jordan

Jordan

Jordan, a country in western Asia, is bordered by Syria, Israel, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Red Sea. As over 80 percent of the country comprises deserts, Jordan is vulnerable to aridity, irregular rainfall distribution, and water scarcity. Flash flooding, after heavy rainfalls in winter, are common. Landslides and erosion problems are concentrated on the steep slopes of mountains and valleys. The country’s vulnerability is exacerbated by the higher concentration of people and valuable estates in areas at risk along rivers and valleys, as well as flood plains.

INVESTING IN JORDAN

Jordan

CIF’s investment in Jordan is through its Clean Technology Fund (CTF). Motivated by objectives of energy security, climate change mitigation, and regional integration in the Mediterranean, this investment is done through the $490-million Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's concentrated solar power (CSP) initiative. It is supporting the development of 960 megawatts of new CSP capacity across Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, and Libya. Jordan is also among the MENA countries and Algeria to be participating in a CTF-supported technical assistance program that aims to lay down the foundation for scaling up CSP technologies by addressing sector-wide weaknesses, such as the absence of a regulatory framework as well as a lack of capacity and knowledge.

Through the CIF-TAF, over $ 315,000 was programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The program covered activites that aim to support climate responsive economic recovery and growth in the aftermath of Covid-19.
