Jamaica

Jamaica

Jamaica is a Small Island Developing State in the English-speaking Caribbean. It is vulnerable to increased temperatures, frequent droughts, heavier rainfalls, and rising sea levels. The country is also affected by hurricanes that can cause severe flooding, when they coincide with its rainy season. Dry spells are expected to increase and affect the central and western parts of the island. Its vulnerability is exacerbated by its high dependence on natural resources and livelihoods related to coastal activities.

INVESTING IN JAMAICA

Jamaica

CIF’s investment in Jamaica is through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR).

Jamaica is one of six Caribbean island nations participating in a regional PPCR program to improve climate data collection, analysis and sharing, and pilot innovative climate resilient initiatives. In line with its own strategic plan for climate resilience under PPCR, Jamaica aims to support mainstreaming climate change in national development planning and decision-making.

Its $30-million PPCR investment plan is aimed at priority projects for improving the quality and accessibility of climate information services and increasing the uptake of adaptation and climate risk management in sector programs and projects. This includes promoting community-based climate reilient practices in the fishing sector, piloting adaptation action to support climate resilience in small and medium-sized businesses, climate-awareness rasing initiatives.

Through the CIF-TAF, there has been over $ 500,000 programmed for technical assistance activities in 2021. The programs cover a variety of areas such as scaling up affordable, clean and resilient energy in the region, and increasing investment mobilization for green and resilient Covid-19 recovery with MSMEs with support from the national development bank.
