Guatemala

Guatemala

Guatemala, located in the northernmost end of the Central American isthmus, is bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, the Gulf of Honduras, and the Pacific Ocean. Guatemala is vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, and landslides. Almost 41 percent of the population are exposed to five or more threats simultaneously. The country’s vulnerability is exacerbated by its reliance on degraded natural resources, rapid population and urbanization growth, vulnerable infrastructure, and low coping capacity.

INVESTING IN GUATEMALA

Guatemala

CIF's investment in Guatemala is through its Forest Investment Program (FIP). In line with Guatemala's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) priorities, its $27-million FIP investment plan aims to strengthen institutions related to forest resource management, promote sustainable forest management to restore forest landscapes and improve the value chain of wood, as well as enhance forest governance in the protected areas and territories of Indigenous peoples and local communities. Strategic partnerships with local actors can promote full and effective participation in the control, monitoring, and management of forests.
