Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific, consists of 332 islands, of which approximately 110 are inhabited. The country is extremely vulnerable to tropical cyclones that occur on an annual basis, including frequent occurrences of multiple strikes in one year. The islands are also vulnerable to rising sea levels, floods, and landslides. The country’s vulnerability is heightened by its high levels of social vulnerability and low degree of coping capacity.
INVESTING IN FIJI
Fiji is one of the first countries invited to prepare an Investment Plan under the Renewable Energy Integration Program. It is expected to deliver its Investment Plan in 2023. In 2022, Fiji was selected as one of the first countries to participate in the Nature, People, and Climate (NPC) investment program. Fiji is seeking finance to support a wide range of initiatives in mangrove cultivation to better protect Fiji’s coastal communities from storm surges.
