Chile

Chile

Chile, occupying a total land area of 2,006,096 square kilometers (sq km), is located in western South America. It is bordered by Peru and Bolivia and has a coastline of over 8,000 km along the Pacific Ocean. Due to the country’s latitude and altitude, Chile has four macrobioclimates: tropical, Mediterranean, temperate, and antiborealis. As Chile is a part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” it is vulnerable to geological and hydrometeorological disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis, wildfires, floods, landslides, and droughts.

INVESTING IN CHILE

Chile

CIF’s investment in Chile is through its Clean Technology Fund (CTF). Despite Chile’s outstanding renewable energy potential, high-risk perceptions, low institutional and technical capacities, as well as a lack of experience with investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, have inhibited large-scale investments.

Chile's $77-million CTF investment plan is targeted at overcoming these barriers and stimulating market development. In particular, CTF funding is helping to derisk investments in early-stage geothermal development and large-scale solar power, including Chile’s first concentrated solar power plant.
