TUESDAY, MAY 25 & WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 2021 | 9:30 TO 13:30 EDT | 13:30 TO 17:30 UTC

To achieve climate neutral, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development pathways, we need transformational change. This workshop builds on the past three years of collective work linked to the Transformational Change Learning Partnership (TCLP). During the workshop we will work together to deepen our collective understanding of what transformational change looks like in different climate sectors, how interventions can shift from emerging concepts to advanced practices of transformational change and which key areas of practice we need to develop further to advance transformational change.

Sessions will include speakers and discussions answering the questions,

  • Why Focus on Transformational Change and What Concepts and Practices Can Bridge the Operationalization Gap?
  • Where Can Transformational Change Concepts and Practices Address Climate Change Challenges?
  • Where Can Transformational Change Concepts and Practices Deepen Our Response to Climate Change Challenges?
  • Which key areas of practice do we need to develop further to advance transformational change?

For more information on the TCLP’s concepts and frameworks of transformational change, please see:

  • Transformational Change Definition and Dimensions (Two-Page Summary)
  • Transformational Change Definition and Dimensions (Brief)
  • Signals of Transformational Change (Brief, Working Draft)

This workshop is part of a series of learning events hosted by the Transformational Change Learning Partnership (TCLP). For more information, please see the TCLP webpage or email ciftclp@worldbank.org.

AGENDA

Tuesday, May 25

9:30 am Session 1: Why Focus on Transformational Change and What Concepts and Practices Can Bridge the Operationalization Gap?
This engaging kick-off to the workshop will explore why transformational change is essential for confronting the global climate crisis. Session 1 begins with a panel discussion of speakers from key climate finance institutions discussing how they are thinking about and acting on approaches to advance transformational change in climate finance, climate action, and development initiatives. Following the panel, participants will cycle through three breakout groups led by representatives from major climate finance institutions to learn about, discuss, and share ideas on different transformational change concepts and frameworks.
11:40 am Session 2: Where Can Transformational Change Concepts and Practices Address Climate Change Challenges?
Session 2 explores what we can learn about transformational change through grounded case studies in four areas relevant to climate action: energy systems, climate resilience, landscapes, and just transition. Participants will learn about and have opportunities to contribute to practical insights from real-world experience, with particular focus on systemic changes needed to overcome barriers to transformation, as well as scaling pathways for expanding transformational impacts. The conversation will continue in Session 3.

Wednesday, May 26

9:30 am Session 3: Where Can Transformational Change Concepts and Practices Deepen Our Response to Climate Change Challenges? Moving from Emergent to Advanced Transformational Change
Signals of transformational change can provide a sense of progress toward transformational change from emerging to advanced. Participants will break into the same small groups as Session 2 to collaborate in Mural and identify what kinds of questions we need to ask to support processes and outcomes to move toward more advanced transformational change. Practitioners can use this initial set of guiding questions in their work.
11:00 am Session4: Key areas of practice for advancing Transformational Change
Concurrent interactive sessions will share ideas on practical tools, frameworks, and guidance for integrating transformational change concepts into planning, implementation, and evaluation processes relevant to climate action. After a short input from experienced partners, participants will share and discuss ideas on what Challenges, Needs, Strategies, and Resources exist to take this area of work forward. Input from these sessions will directly inform the development of guidance, tools, resources, and collaboration by the CIF TCLP and its partners in 2021.
12:30 pm Virtual Brown Bag Lunch & Happy Hour: The future of transformational change
Join us for a virtual networking experience in Gather Town! Move around the virtual lounge to organically “walk” in and out of conversations, just like real life.
