The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) will organize or participate in several events at this year's Innovate4Climate conference (I4C). Each event focuses on a key theme for the future of the planet and allows CIF to share lessons from its experience of managing over $8.5 billion in climate investments in developing countries.

I4C is an annual global conference on climate finance, climate investment and climate markets. This year's event will be held online from 25 to 27 May and hosted by the World Bank Group and the governments of Spain and Germany. You can find out more about the sessions involving CIF - and sign up to attend - here:

The private sector has a pivotal role to play in tackling climate change. As companies pursue low-carbon investments like renewable energy, energy efficiency, or resilience, they help green markets grow and proliferate in the long-term. Sustainable markets can lead to large-scale greenhouse gas mitigation and strengthened climate resilience in developing countries. But how can companies be encouraged to make first investments in areas they might view as unfamiliar or risky?

This session will attempt to offer answers by exploring topics including:

  • The role of targeted concessional financing in giving companies confidence or certainty to enter green markets.
  • The importance of partnership between different stakeholders in climate investment projects.
  • How MDBs and companies can collaborate to invest in climate solutions.
  • How households can be supported to make their homes more efficient and climate-resilient.
  • How innovative pricing models can create incentives for new investments

An aim of the workshop will be to analyse projects involving CIF which successfully mobilize the private sector and ask what lessons can be learned and applied elsewhere to support climate change mitigation and adaptation. Participants will focus in particular on CIF projects in Turkey and Chile.

2) Cities, businesses, and financiers delivering a green, resilient and just future

26 May, 09:30 EDT

Moderator: Josué Tanaka, Principal Finance Advisor, C40 Cities

Speakers:

  • Global South Mayor - TBC
  • Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director of UN Global Compact
  • Mafalda Duarte, CEO, CIF

Cities are grappling with the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. All the while, the climate emergency gets more severe every year, with devastating impacts on municipalities on every continent. But cities have an opportunity: they are in a unique position to show bold global leadership and commit to a green, resilient and just transition. This was recently demonstrated by a global coalition of more than 40 mayors from the world's largest cities who committed to driving a green, resilient and just recovery.

In this panel discussion led by C40 Cities, a mayor from the Global South will join representatives of the private sector and finance sector to discuss the challenges and opportunities of financing urban climate action. Cities need financing to build urban climate resilience and invest in climate-smart infrastructure systems. The broad make-up of this panel reflects the need for a broad coalition of stakeholders to work together to achieve this objective, including:

  • Businesses providing goods and service
  • Political leaders, including mayors
  • Financial institutions

The session aims to identify pathways that cities can follow to make a green, resilient and just recovery. Mafalda Duarte, Head of CIF, will draw on CIF's experience of working with cities to develop innovative financing mechanisms. She will share lessons learned in the process of implementing these mechanisms that can benefit other cities' efforts.

3) : Powering past coal: accelerating a transformative and just transition

How do we move away from coal without leaving communities behind? This key issue will be explored in two sessions co-hosted by the World Bank, the CIF and the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA).

Phasing Out Coal and Phasing in New Economic Opportunities: Repurposing Innovations.

26 May, 10:30 EDT

Moderator: Christopher Evans, Powering Past Coal Alliance

Speakers:

  • Demetrios Papathanasiou, Global Director for the Energy and Extractives Global Practice, World Bank
  • Dr Wolfhart Pohl, Lead Environmental Specialist, World Bank’s Environment Global Practice
  • Kate Chisholm, SVP Planning, Stakeholder Relations and Chief Sustainability, Capital Power
  • Jan Bondaruk, Deputy Director for Environmental Engineering, GiG Research Institute, Poland
  • Mike Ward, Senior Evaluation Specialist, Climate Investment Funds

A discussion on the challenges of transforming brownfields and related infrastructure to spur economic transformation of coal regions, Part 1 will present a catalogue of the present stumbling blocks to responsibly close and transform coal mining lands, coal power plants, and their related assets; share new methodologies and approaches to reach stakeholder agreement on future land uses.

The CIF will present its findings from a case study that was developed as part of the Just Transition Initiative, a partnership project between CIF and the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Energy Security & Climate Change Program. It analyzes the experience of the transition in South Africa, and offers insights that can inform the planning, financing and implementation of Just Transitions elsewhere in the world.
