NORCURE® Electrochemical Chloride Removal System
The NORCURE® system is a rehabilitation method to remove salt (chloride ions) from salt-contaminated concrete structures. The removal of chloride ions and the re-establishment of the passive oxide layer around the reinforcing steel eliminates or greatly reduces on-going rebar corrosion. Chlorides are drawn out of the concrete by applying a direct current electric field between a temporary anode at the surface of the concrete and the reinforcing steel within the concrete. Chloride ions migrate from areas near the reinforcing steel toward the anode and out of the concrete. At the same time as chlorides are being removed, hydroxyl ions are produced at the rebar within the structure and restore the highly alkaline environment around the rebar.

The Paradigm: In-Place Concrete Recycling System
Paradigm is a mobile, portland cement concrete recycling system for highway reconstruction. Where highway reconstruction calls for the use of recycled concrete to be crushed and placed as subbase, current practice requires demolition of existing concrete, hauling the broken concrete offset for crushing, and again hauling the crushed material back to the construction site for placement. The Paradigm system combines these steps into a continuous operation. A specialized machine train breaks the existing slab, removes reinforcing steel, grades the road base, crushes and sizes the concrete, and stockpiles the new base material onto the prepared subgrade, ready for compaction. Productivity in service for the Iowa Department of Transportation averaged 2000 ft/day with all gradation specifications satisfied.

Project Equity Account Trust (P.E.A.T.)®
Project Equity Account Trust, known as P.E.A.T.®, is a unique collective bargaining agreement that unites Labor and Management in a team approach to build projects by harnessing each parties strengths to their mutual interests. The P.E.A.T.® Agreement was created by Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation, was negotiated with the Maine State Building Trades Council, and was first implemented at the Virgin Pulp Substitute Project in Auburn, Maine. Under the agreement, Union craft workers risk an amount equal to 10% of their wages to assure that milestone goals, which are mutually agreed to, are met during the term of the project. The P.E.A.T. funds are matched by Stone & Webster at a rate of 50%, and both amounts are held "at risk", contingent upon successful on-time/on-budget performance. The Agreement recognizes Labor as a full stakeholder to the overall success of the project. Through this partnering arrangement, Labor gains a voice in the management of the day-to-day construction activities.

Recycled Plastic Pier
The City of New York has constructed the 11,400 sq.ft. Tiffany Street Pier using Post Consumer Recycled Plastic (PCRP). This material had been used by other municipalities for fender piles and pier decking, and it appeared that the same product with the addition of adequate reinforcement might be used in a structural way. This important concept proved viable from an engineering standpoint. A second and equally important consideration was that the PCRP product reduced the volume of plastic in the solid waste stream that would enter a landfill.

PCRP has UV and plasticizer additives in its mix and replaces traditional creosoted and CCA pressure treated timbers. It has many advantages: it is environmentally friendly; it is resistant to marine borers; it has a higher flash point than traditional timbers; it has an infrequent maintenance need; and it does not split, delaminate, rot, corrode or spall. It is also cost effective on a life- cycle basis even when considering the higher cost of the material.

ULTRA-TWIST(TM) - A325 Strength Blind Bolt
A twist-off blind bolt, called Ultra-Twist(TM), is a recently developed structural steel fastener which meets the tensile strength and tension requirements of the A325 Specification. It is used for joining structural steel members where there is access only from one side such as in joints between tubular sections. The Ultra-Twist(TM) bolt is available in three diameters: 3/4, 7/8, and 1 inches; and in grip lengths that range from one quarter to three inches. The Ultra-Twist(TM) fastener is easily installed in about 35 seconds with a standard electric shear wrench used for ordinary twist-off fasteners.
