Description: |
BE&K Construction Company opened its BEKare Child Development Center to encourage women to apply for jobs as carpenters, electricians, welders, and even pipefitters. The center, which represents a first-year investment of more than $750,000, is the first mobile child care center in the construction industry. It was designed specifically to meet the child care problems of field construction workers. In addition to encouraging women to take jobs, the center is aimed at reducing absenteeism by women trying to hold a job and rear children. The center can be dismantled and moved to another site. The staff of the center are professional employees of BE&K and are available to move along with the facility. The BEKare center is open as needed, and this flexibility applies not only for 10-hour workdays but to training periods and other timing demands of the project. It can be open 24 hours a day if necessary. Keyword: day care, 1991 NOVA Award Winner |
