INNOVATOR - FALL 1997
Nomination Edition

CIF's Board of Directors, Jury and 1997 NOVA Awared Winners at the March 1997 Banquet.

CIF Nominations for 1998 at all time high

Forty-six Nominees!

Forty-six nominees are in the running for the 1998 NOVA Award competition. The number of nominations CIF receives continues to break records. This year's nominees beat 1997 by a total of 4, and that record broke the previous year's all time high of 34.

The 1998 nominees were submitted by twenty different states with three from Canada, one from Russia and one from Switzerland. See Page 2 and 3 of this newsletter for a complete listing of the nominees for 1998.

1998 CIF Innovation Celebration

Plans for celebrating the 10th Innovation Celebration are well underway. The March 12, 1998 gala will kick off the start of the 10th Anniversary Innovation Celebration. The tenth year celebration will continue throughout the year and culminate at the 1999 Innovation Celebration with the presentation of the 10th annual NOVA Awards. CIF Board Member Greg Dobson, from Albert Kahn Associates, will chair the 10 year Celebration activities.

Tickets for the 1998 Celebration are selling at a brisk pace, so reserve your space early. The keynote speaker will be Hanns Baumann, inventor of Baumesh, a 1992 NOVA Award winner. His speech will cover Inventions and Inventors. The Celebration begins at 4:30 PM with a cocktail reception, followed by a magnificent dinner, keynote speech and the presentation of the ninth NOVA Awards. Call the CIF office for a ticket reservation form at (734) 995-1855.

The NOVA Award Jury Process

The selection of the NOVA Award recipients is a four stage process. The first stage is the Call for Nominations which starts the day after the March Innovation Celebration and ends September 15 of each year. The Jury meets to review the nominations and selects finalists for further investigation. CIF investigators contact people listed in the nominations and independent sources, and prepare a confidential report on each finalist. The reports are submitted to the Jury in early January.

The Jury meets again in late January to review each report and selects the NOVA Award winners. Each winner is notified and work is begun on the script for the Innovation Celebration presentation.

The NOVA Award winners are announced and statues are presented to the winning innovations at the Innovation Celebration held each March. All nomi-nees and winners are acknowledged at the Innovation Celebration in a Nominee Booklet that is given to each attendee.

CIF Awards Manager is Robert B. Harris; investigators are Tony Tons, John Everett, Photios Ioannou, Bob Carr, Gary Elling, and Will Hansen of University of Michigan, Liang Liu of University of Illinois, and Iris Tommelein of Univesity of California, all Professors of Civil Engineering.

New Membership and Sponsorship Levels

The CIF Board of Directors formally adopted many changes to CIF Membership. John Doherty, Chair of the Sponsorship Committee spearheaded the changes and says "more companies would rather be a sponsor instead of a member, these new changes reflect that trend."Many of the new sponsor levels include free tickets to the banquet and advertising space in the newly designed Banquet program. The new Banquet program format is larger and will include descriptions of the 1998 NOVA nominees. Here are the new categories listed with their respective dues and benefits.
