The NOVA Award Mock Jury

The CIF invites all construction, civil engineering, and architecture programs and professional groups to participate in the NOVA Award Mock Jury of the 35 nominations for the 2003 NOVA Awards. Each Mock Jury screens nominations the same as the regular NOVA Awards Jury to select a short-list of those that will make a revolutionary and significant improvement of quality or decrease in construction cost. To hold a Mock Jury, first download the MOCK JURY KIT, which includes Mock Jury Instructions, and distribute its information to all Mock Jury members. Download the 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS, and make the file accessible on computers or print the number of copies needed for your Mock Jury. These provide your Mock Jury with the information furnished to the regular Jury. The Mock Jury Process is described in more detail below.

The regular Jury Nomination Screening Meeting date is November 15, 2002 at which a short-list of nominations is selected for in-depth investigation. Investigators at the University of Michigan and other universities perform investigations and prepare reports on these innovations. These confidential reports are distributed to the Jury in January. The Jury meets in early February to select up to five innovations to receive the 2003 NOVA Award.

Mock Jury Kit

The MOCK JURY KIT and the 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS, provide Mock Jury participants  the same information the regular NOVA Award Jury uses to screen each year's nominations. Click here to download MOCK JURY KIT as an executable compressed file, Mock2003.exe, of ~ 372 Kb. (For help, see Downloading, Viewing, and Printing Files.) Once you have downloaded and stored Mock2003.exe on one of your disk drives, double-click on it and it will expand into the following three files:

• MockJury2003.PDF contains complete instructions for conducting a Mock Jury, plus a score sheet for Jurors to use in scoring nominations.
• NomForm02.PDF is the NOVA Award Nomination Form.
• MockJury2002.XLS is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file to be used by each Mock Jury is to record, sort, and report all Jurors' scores.

MockJury2003.PDF and NomForm02.PDF are Adobe Acrobat files. Print them and distribute copies to all Mock Jurors. Install MockJury2003.XLS on a computer on which Jurors' scores can be entered, sorted, and printed just before the Mock Jury is held.

The 2002 NOVA Award Nominations Book

Download the 2003 NOVA Award Nominations Book to obtain the complete set of 35 nominations for the 2003 NOVA Award in a single large file to be viewed, copied, or printed. You can also view, download, and print individual nominations in the List of 2003 NOVA Award Nominations. (For help, see Viewing, Downloading, and Printing Files.)

The 2003 NOVA Award Nominations Book book can be downloaded in four formats: 

• NomBook2003-screen.pdf (2.9 Mb) has good quality figures for viewing. (You need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print pdf files.)
• NomBook2002-print.pdf (9.5 Mb) has the best quality figures for printing. (You need Version 4 of  Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print this pdf file.)

The Mock Jury Process

• Schedule the Mock Jury for a period of two to three hours or for successive classes (such as Monday and Wednesday class periods). Groups of more than 8-12 can be split into two or more Mock Jury panels that meet independently..
• Download 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS as a *.PDF file and other materials from www.CIF.org. Print one book of nominations for about every four Jurors.
• Copy and distribute materials in the MOCK JURY KIT to all Jurors.
• Place the 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS where they are accessible to Jurors. Jurors need about two weeks before the Mock Jury to schedule 3-5 hours to read the NOVA Award criteria and read and grade the nominations.
• Install the MockJury2002.XLS Score Sheet on an accessible computer.
• Enter Jurors’ scores into the Score Sheet in advance of the Mock Jury, sort the nominations according to their scores, and print and distribute the Score Sheet to the Jurors at the start of the Mock Jury.
• At the Mock Jury, Jurors work as a group to select the set of nominations they feel warrants in-depth investigation to determine the NOVA Award winners.
• Principal steps in the Mock Jury meeting are (1) discuss all nominations that any Juror considers might be worthy of the NOVA Award and then (2) select the 6 to 10 nominations that have the greatest potential of winning the NOVA Award.
• Send the Mock Jury’s list of selected nominations to the CIF. In return, you will receive the lists from the real Jury and other Mock Juries.

Downloading, Viewing, and Printing Files
Click with your mouse on a hyperlink, and you immediately get the action for which the hyperlink. is programmed. For example, clicking takes you immediately to web pages (like this webpage) or bookmarks (like this section), or clicking downloads files (like MOCK JURY KIT and 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS) onto whatever disk drive and directory you designate. The MOCK JURY KIT is an executable (*.EXE) compressed file, Mock2003.exe = 372 Kb. and 2003 NOVA AWARD NOMINATIONS is an Adobe Acrobat (*.PDF) file. (You need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print PDF files. NomPrint.PDF requires Version 4.)

To download and save a file on your disk drive, click on it in whatever manner works for your browser and operating system. (For example, in Internet Explorer 5, right click your mouse on the highlighted hyperlink and select "Save Target As" to download the file.) This will save the file onto the disk drive and directory you specify, with the name you specify. (We recommend you retain the suffix, such as PDF or EXE, even if you change the prefix..)

You are welcome to distribute any files you download from this website, either as computer file(s) or in printed form. You may also photocopy what you print, but photocopying loses much of the detail, particularly in the graphics.
