Who is CIF

Letter from the Founding Chairman:
The goal of the Construction Innovation Forum (CIF) is to foster
and encourage innovations in construction. The CIF began as an idea of a
handful of people in 1986 and has grown into a worldwide grass roots
organization that is known and respected for its NOVA
Award, the 'Nobel Prize' for innovation in construction.
New solutions to construction challenges occur only when individuals
are inspired to think in new ways and such inspiration is a primary goal
of the Construction Innovation Forum. The NOVA Awards
exist to draw attention to innovative thinking and the need for more of
it. So far, 40 NOVA Awards have been presented to innovative construction
technologies, processes, and projects.
Equally important are the more than 380 NOVA Award nominations received
to date, which are summarized and accessible world wide in the CIF
searchable database. They represent a
great body of creative problem solving and new thinking about many areas
of the construction process. We present them in the hope that you will be
inspired to face your own challenges with an innovative spirit, and that
we will see a nomination from you in the near future.
I am encouraged to see that many of your peers know of the CIF and the
NOVA Award. We need to continue our efforts and
work together to promote advancement and change in our industry. The CIF
offers several practical steps to help you do just that: If you haven't
nominated a project for the NOVA Award, think
about making a nomination; if you're not a member of the CIF, join up;
read about the innovations on this web site -- and use one.
The CIF is not here just to hand out awards -- however enjoyable the
task. We are here to help spur on the innovation and change needed to keep
our industry thriving in this new +millennium.

What is The Construction Innovation Forum (CIF)?
The Construction Innovation Forum is an international, non-profit
organization formed in 1987 to recognize innovations in the construction
industry that improve the quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness of
construction.
How does the CIF recognize innovation?
Each year, the CIF presents the NOVA Award to honor innovations that have
proven to improve construction quality and cost. The NOVA Award has
a serious mission: to illuminate the innovations and innovators that have
made important contributions to the construction industry. Nominations
come from all segments of the industry and represent the efforts of
owners, contractors, architects, engineers and others to improve the
industry. The award nominations represent proven cost savings and quality
improvement on actual projects.

What are the goals of CIF?
- Identify important innovations that have contributed to construction
quality and cost effectiveness.
- Educate industry leaders on the importance of innovation in their
companies and associations.
- Encourage contractors, engineers, buyers, associations, and vendors
to develop, implement, and require innovative processes.
- Publicly recognize important construction innovations through
awards, publications, etc.
- Develop financial support for further innovation within the
construction industry and its varied services.
How did it get started?
The Forum was developed in response to the "lack of innovation" identified
by the Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness (CICE) survey conducted by
the Business Roundtable in the early 1980's. It was formed to enhance the
image of the 425 billion dollar/year construction industry, by meeting the
challenges of:
- Declining productivity
- Shortage of skilled workers
- Rising costs
- Fragmentation
- Little R&D investment
How well is it working?
The CIF has grown to over 100 member companies from all segments of the
industry including owners, architects, engineers, contractors, labor
organizations and associations. In addition, eighteen exemplary NOVA
Awards have been given to innovations ranging from a spatial positioning
system for construction sites, to breakthrough programs that help women
succeed in high-paying, skilled trades. Information on the NOVA Award
winning innovations is published in a variety of industry publications and
newsletters, helping to increase awareness of these valuable techniques.
Does it duplicate other efforts?
No. The unique NOVA Award program compliments the efforts of other groups
working to improve productivity and the image of the construction
industry. The Forum has worked in concert with the Business Roundtable,
the Construction Industry Institute, the Civil Engineering Research
Foundation and other industry groups to eliminate overlap of effort. The
NOVA Award is the only award that includes all segments of the
construction industry.
Who can submit a nomination for the NOVA Award?
Anyone may submit a nomination for consideration. Innovators and their
employers must submit enough information about the innovation to allow
documentation for the awards jury. Nominees are not expected to be Forum
members, and self-nominations are encouraged. There is no entry fee.
Why should a company join?
The mission and objectives of the Construction Innovation Forum cannot
become a reality without widespread industry endorsement, endowment and
participation. Much has been accomplished since 1987, but now we need your
help to:
- Join the Construction Innovation Forum to promote innovation and
enhance the industry's image.
- Nominate innovations for the NOVA Award and encourage others to do
so.
- Attend the annual Innovation Celebration banquet and NOVA Awards
presentation.
- Provide financial support through sponsorship of special projects.
Together we can make a difference.
Innovation Sponsorships
Innovation sponsorships are available for the NOVA Awards and CIF such as
NOVA Award Winner videos, Jury meetings, Winner expenses, and the
CIF.org web site. Please contact the CIF office for cost, availability, and benefits.
